Note to publishers from Theresa Lacey: Until his sudden passing in 1992, ROOTS author Alex Haley was a neighbor of mine when I lived in Norris, Tennessee. I was a struggling writer, working at the Museum of Appalachia there, and we struck up a friendship when he would visit his long-time friend, fellow writer and museum owner, John Rice Irwin. When I shared some of my writing with Alex, AND told him of receiving rejection letters for that work, he was insistent that I never give up. "You're a good writer, and there's always room for more good writers," he told me. "Keep writing. Don't let rejection letters stop you from writing more." As a result of my meeting and being encouraged by him, I named a character in GROWING SEASON after him (the character Alex Parker). W.E.B.Griffin has long been a writer in the military-thriller genre, but first wrote Young Adult novels. He's read some of my work, including GROWING SEASON, and in reading that, proclaimed me "a truly gifted storyteller"--high praise coming from a great writer like him! Dr. McCollister and I met at a writers' conference, and in some of our correspondence after that, he wrote in response to my writing samples: "I look forward to seeing your titles in bookstores such as Barnes and Noble and thinking, 'I know her.'" All this has served to keep me going and inspire me to do my best writing. |
